A refreshing combination of coconut cream and coconut milk infuse tropical flavors into my favorite reposado tequila margarita, served on the rocks. This recipe makes just two coconut margaritas, but you can easily make a big pitcher for game days and bbqs!

All Aboard the Patron Tequila Express! Arriba!
Back in the day — aka 10+ years ago and pre-child so I had plenty of extra time — I volunteered as a fundraiser/weekend adoption go-er/dog photo-taker/graphic designer and board member for Much Love Animal Rescue in Los Angeles.
That year, our biggest fundraising event was Bow Wow Ciao, an amazing event at the Malibu estate of the billionaire John Paul DeJoria (founder of John Paul Mitchell and Patron Spirits).
The big ticket item of the night’s live auction was a luxury overnight trip aboard The Patron Tequila Express. After a heated battle that drove the price up, up and up, DeJoria called the live auction and my friends Bart and Stacy bought themselves a train ride.
And they invited friends! And my husband and I were two of them.
That railway trip left me with some amazing memories and a true affinity for the finer side of life, including a penchant for sipping tequila whether it’s on, or off, the train.
Since then I’ve had my fair share of tequila cocktails. But one favorite concoction has stuck out from the bunch — this creamy coconut lime margarita.
Enjoy! Heidi

A Few Key Ingredients I Recommend
This is a dreamy, creamy coconut marg recipe that uses more ingredients than a traditional lime margarita. Here are a few extra items I always add:
Reposado Tequila
I use Patron’s reposado tequila in this cocktail. Reposado tequila imparts citrus and honey notes with a bit of earthiness after being barrelled in oak. If you’re not into oak, try Patron Silver instead.
Simple Syrup
The original recipe didn’t call for a sweetener, because this is a margarita, not a daiquiri. But I added a little simple syrup juuuuust to sweeten it up a little bit. Add more or less to your taste.

Coconut Cream
This is a double coconutty cocktail thanks to the blend of coconut milk and cream used. You might feel you can skip the coconut cream and go just with coconut milk for this recipe, but I say don’t do it.
The coconut cream gives the drink a more intense coconut flavor and creamy texture. Coconut cream can coagulate in the can, so be sure to stir it well and discard any chunks that don’t smooth out.

These Margaritas Are Shaken, Not Stirred
If you’ve got a cocktail shaker, go ahead and bust it out for this recipe.
The creamy coconut margarita mixture is made by measuring everything into the shaker, then shaking until nice and frothy and straining into a glass full of ice.
Garnish with a lime wedge, like the classy cocktail mixologist you are.
Want to Make a Big Pitcher?
Measure the ingredients into a pitcher in “parts” (or with actual measuring cups) and then stir well to combine. Do not add ice to the pitcher! This will water down the margarita mixture.

with it; replace it with some of the water in a recipe. Or you could put it in your coffee… if you were feeling crazy margarita mix and have some coconut-water-virgin-Martinis. Or mix it…

I was excited to try this special drink and wanted to serve it at a party with the theme “Hawaiian Luau”. So the night before after buying the very expensive Patron etc. I made it and it was just Okay. That disappoints me greatly. There are many okay drinks and hoped this was the one that made the big difference. Nope!

Woha, such good memories and a fabulous train ride! I think they’d have to carry me off! I’ll have to get over to Grim’s Provisions; I make it up to Capitol Hill occasionally yet I haven’t been to Grim’s… thanks for the recommendation. Looking forward to trying Patron’s reposado tequila. With notes of honey and citrus, I know it’s something I’d like. Thank you for this recipe Heidi! I look forward to trying it!

This post was so much fun to read – I was ‘Living Large’ – vicariously !! I have a somewhat similar tale… Years ago we got the opportunity to view the America’s Cup Race from a gorgeous yacht. The next day, back in the real world, I felt a bit cranky!! This Coconut Margarita looks soo delicious – I think it’s going to be My Drink of Choice this summer!!
Isn’t it great to have experiences like that, such huge memory makers.
