Hey hey and happy Fri-YAY!
At our house, this is the last weekend before school begins. That’s why earlier this week I was able to persuade my daughter and a couple of her friends to join me at the lake for an afternoon soaking up the sun and floating in the water.
Later, we came home and fixed up a simple chilled seafood dinner of snow crab and easy shrimp cocktail, grilled corn, and burrata and tomato caprese salad. Not to be left out, Dino Nuggets were served for the non-seafood eater.
That day was one of our summer swan songs, and while it may have been just another day for them, it filled this mama up.
This semester, my high schooling daughter will be distance learning which means more time at home with her mama, but no more summer sleeping in. She’s going to be thrilled with both I’m sure.
But I feel lucky. Lucky that I have the option to work from home so I can be there for her when she needs me. Lucky that my family is healthy. And lucky that I have self-funded health care, that while ridiculously expensive for my little family of three, covers us when we need it. I only wish every American could say the same for all three of these things.
This school year will be a doozy. Trying to keep focused while doing school work at home plus balancing AP classes, ACT tests, and deciding what the future holds is already causing jitters for my girl. And for her mama and daddy too. There won’t be a any dances, who knows what will happen with high school sports, and all those extra school activities will likely become way less extra. But knowing we are just one of millions of families experiencing the same non-experiences that school has always provided, somehow makes it a little less traumatic.
We will get through this. We have to. Because that’s what we do—together.
But let’s put thoughts of getting back to the grind to the side. It’s the weekend! And one of the last of the summer, so let’s get out and have some fun.
But first, let’s dig into this week’s list of Friday Faves. XO.
