Paparazzi-chased limousines and never-ending flash of camera flashes. Form-fitted, haute couture-dressed beauties dripping in diamonds floating down the cascading red carpet. Acceptance speeches that have been rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed because, “It’s just an honor to be nominated.” Uh-huh. We’ve heard that one before.
The Academy Awards telecast is one of my favorite TV nights of the year, when the pomp and circumstance of Oscar’s big night and the celebrity falderal come front and center and we cheer—and jeer—the winners and the losers of Hollywood’s biggest popularity contest.
Which makes it the perfect night for us to pop some champers ourselves, invite some friends over and party like the Hollywood royalty we aren’t.
Who will be the big winner? It’s anyone’s guess with Vegas bookies as nervously sweaty about the odds as the ravenous, 10-day cleanse-ed actresses starvingly awaiting Wolfgang’s braised short ribs to be served.
For me, I have my odds-on favorite to win and a recipe to honor it in all the glory it’s leading man and his abs deserves.
Ever since the 1996 Golden Globes, when Brad—yeah, we’re on a first name basis, just don’t tell my husband—won the award for Best Supporting Actor and thanked his “love o’ my life, the angel Gwyneth Paltrow”—oh, if only that had worked out—I have been rooting for the poor little guy who just can’t catch a break to win at The Big Show. Maybe this will be his coup de grace, the one thing that will put him on a cover of a magazine.
So what’s my tribute to the big night?
I’m pairing Brad Pitt’s heart and soul that became the Best Picture-nominated movie Moneyball with my must-have at any baseball game: the illustrious Hot Dog, glammed up with puff pastry, smokey mustard and herbs. A dressed-up version that is so simple to make and perfect for serving a crowd.

Mini Hot Dog Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 pound package frozen puff pastry I use Pepperidge Farms
- flour for dusting
- 1 egg beaten
- 8 uncooked jumbo all-beef kosher hot dogs or chicken sausage cut in half crosswise
- 1 tablespoon smokey or grainy mustard
- small handful herbs such as thyme marjoram or chopped rosemary
- kosher salt
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
-
Defrost puff pastry according to package instructions. Roll the pastry out on a floured counter to a rectangle of about 19” x 12”. Cut the large rectangle in half lengthwise, then cut both smaller rectangles into eight equal sections down to 16 rectangles total.
-
Spread a small amount of mustard on top 1/3 of each pastry rectangle. Lay a piece of hot dog or sausage on mustard and sprinkle with herb of choice. Brush the other end of the rectangle with a little of the beaten egg and roll the sausage up in the pastry, sealing the ends. Put the sausage rolls in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes for the pastry to chill.
-
Remove from the refrigerator and prick with a fork, brush with the rest of the beaten egg, sprinkle with kosher salt and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry has turned a golden brown and looks crisp. Remove from the oven and serve warm or at room temperature with more mustard.

There is a reason why I bought a Mac, it was not to be one of the cool kids that wanted the best of the best. No it was because of the music production I do on it. Hours and hours sitting in front of my Mac copying, pasting, moving, deleting, hour after hour just beating on my Mac in a endless assault to get my work done. That is the key part, my work. I work from home, it is great, but even if it is from home it is still work and it still needs to get done. So my Mac, I have it because it is fast, gets the job done and comes back for more.
But what happens when it doesn’t want to do those things anymore?
I move around massive amounts of information and yes even on the almighty Mac this can cause a problem after a while. Things fragment, programs get corrupted issues come up. My light speed Mac slows down to a crawl and all of the sudden I simply can not get any work done. Because I work from home there is no IT guy to call and ask to come fix it. No instead I have to figure out what is wrong. I am lucky, I did, but not after trying everything under the sun first and wasting countless hours looking for one program that can do what I needed instead of ten programs. One program to lead them all….okay that was a lame Lord of the rings reference, but that program was/is Detox My Mac. A simple to use program that did not just fix my issues, it put my Mac on overdrive again. A few clicks and my Mac was clean and ready to rock and roll again.
