Hey, hey and happy Friday!
And just like that—*SNAP*—January 2020 is in the history books. With time flying by so quickly, I’m grateful for my iPhone. Why? Because I can swipe back through the month and get a snapshot of where in the heck it went.
One of my goals for this year was to take a photo of one thing I did every day—that’s NOT FOOD!—just to have a visual history of it. That said, I 100% depend on my phone for noting salads like the one above from one of Park City’s solid casual eateries I’m reworking to put here on the blog. Sorry, I don’t have the recipe yet, but it will be coming soon!
Our phone’s cameras are incredible historians. They’re always at hand, have great quality, and can hold tons of shots we’d never take with a real camera. However, I’ve failed miserably at my daily documenting. But that doesn’t mean I can’t start it up now. Today. On a Friday even! It’s not like we need to have a special day, or beginning of the year to jumpstart something new. We just have to do it.
Like all of us have been reminded this week, time is fleeting, and our lives as we know it can change or end in an instant.
On that note, I have a question.
How are you?
Inspired by one of my weekly blog reads linked below, I want to know how YOU are. I yammer on each week with glimpses into my life, but I don’t know you.
So, how are you doing? I’m taking 100% inspiration from Jo and asking you to share and tell us what you’re thinking about in the comments:
- What you had for breakfast today?
- What you’re reading or watching that we should be too?
- Something you’re worried about?
- Tell us something you’re looking forward to?
Come on now. Don’t be shy. PLEASE leave a comment. I KNOW there are thousands of you reading this post, so don’t make me feel like I’m living in a silo with only voyeurs who come to visit. Join the conversation. The comments are always the most fun.
But enough about me—let’s keep talking about you, and dig into this week’s Friday Faves.

Coming from not too far away in Grand Junction, CO. I’m back at work this last month after staying at home for 18 months with my new twins. If things weren’t chaotic enough, another variable is making life whiz by. After all that time at home, I read a whole bunch of blogs, but your’s is one of the few I make time for now. Cheers Heidi and thanks for the recommendation of the “Morning Show” a few weeks ago, really enjoyed it!

Thanks Maggie!

I always love Friday Faves and enjoyed reading the comments from readers. I’d like to read the book “A Woman of Importance” by Sonia Purcell that sounds interesting, thanks to El for the suggestion. I hope Mrs. Amen gets Good pathology news, I’m wishing her the best. I love Friday Faves and always enjoy the comments.
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
Thank you Patti! So glad you’re here!

FUNNN! Thanks girl!

I passed on my regular yogurt for breakfast, and had egg whites on toast because we made creme brulee for my husband’s birthday yesterday, and we had to use up the yolks.
This morning I finished Know My Name, a memoir by Chanel Miller, who was the young woman who was assaulted by Stanford student Brock Turner. It was an incredible book, and I highly recommend it.
I am worried about the election and our country’s future.
I am looking forward to having friends over for the Super Bowl tomorrow. I am not a football fan, but I do love the food and company. AND we live in Kansas City, so it will be fun to watch everyone cheer the Chiefs on.
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
I loved reading this. Thanks for sharing Kristin.

I totally the understand the feeling of living in a silo – yes, there are people out there, but feeling as though you’re transmitting, but no one is sending. One way communications.
So … what did I have for breakfast today? Same ol’ same ol’ – cottage cheese with some fruit, juice and COFFEE!! (Trader Joe’s Shade grown Nicuaraguan coffee at the moment.)
Just finished reading a 1999 book by Jamyang Norbu “The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes”. Brilliant!! Just started “A Woman of No Importance” by Sonia Purnell, about Victoria Hall, who was instrumental in establishing the resistance in France during World War II.
Looking forward to trying out some baking recipes – bought a pounds of apples from a local orchard!! Apple pie, here we come!!
Heidi
Ah thanks El! I’m a fan of cottage cheese for breakfast too, did you see this recipe? https://www.foodiecrush.com/caprese-avocado-toast/ I eat it ALL THE TIME. Enjoy the apple pie, and where in the world do you have fresh apples this time of year??
El
Heidi – Yes, I’ve seen your caprese-avocado toast recipe, but finding decent avocados is an uphill battle around here. On the other hand, upstate NY is an interesting place in the late autumn and early winter. Even last month, we were able to buy fresh apples that were late harvests. They’re in the cold room (aka the garage) and will be eaten, made into apple sauce (or apple butter, if I get really energetic!) and the ubiquitous apple pie. Haven’t gotten to the pies yet, but will try very hard to send a photo when I do!!
El
Heidi – that link to the garlic naan – actually went to “yes you can recycle that”. Which is a great link, but I was looking for naan bread, not what to do with old mascara wands!!
Heidi
FIxed! And here is the link for quick reference https://zestfulkitchen.com/garlic-naan-recipe/
Jeanne
Hi Heidi
I made a terrific breakfast today of sautéed kale and sweet potatoes with an egg on top along with a delicious latte. I’m looking forward to watching the Super Bowl commercials and eating a bunch of great food on Sunday and I always look forward to the Friday Faves email each week.
Heidi
Jeanne, you and I are soul sisters. I LOVE savory kale or spinach for breakfast too. Sounds like you definitely have the right breakfast idea. LOVE IT.
Judy Iverson
Hello Heidi! I had oatmeal for breakfast and I’m looking forward to a summer trip to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. I’m dealing with a pesky paperwork problem at the moment, but know that this, too, shall pass. Love your blog, but have a request. Can you please share the garlic naan link? When I click the current one it goes to things you can recycle. Anyhoo, thanks bunches for the great recipes.
Heidi
Yes! Sorry, my linking skillz are off :) it’s fixed and here it is for quick reference https://zestfulkitchen.com/garlic-naan-recipe/ :)
Linda
Today’s breakfast was scrambled eggs, Belgium waffle with blue berries and chantilly cream, salmon, snow crab, shrimp and a blood Mary. Ok, I know it’s Friday, but I’m sailing on Celebrity Edge in the Caribbean . And, technically, it was brunch
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
Delish! Enjoy!
Heidi
Oh man LInda I want your life! And HOW COOL IS IT that you can be sailing in the Caribbean and still read this little old blog. Isn’t the world just amazing?!? Which island are you near? Have a fabulous vacation—and better brunch :)
Thomas Manley
the shrimp with the salad and carrot sticks looks great! I want the recipe too. I never thought of adding the blueberries to the quinoa. That is a different touch. Thanks for making my Fridays with something good to read. Now it is time for my coffee.
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
Thank you Thomas
Heidi
Thanks for sharing your coffee with us Thomas :) and thanks for reading!
jude
oops………..the garlic naan link goes to mascara
Heidi
Sorry about that here is the correct link https://zestfulkitchen.com/garlic-naan-recipe/

Thanks Ashley!

I just turned a book back into the library (yes, I still prefer the weight of a book with pages to turn in my hands). Self-compassion: stop beating yourself up and leave insecurity behind By Kristin Neff. I’m working through a daily practice of pushing aside my negative self talk. It’s enlightening in this mid-life journey I’m currently figuring out!
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
Sounds like a wonderful book!
Heidi
Vasyl I LOVE that! And even better you got it from the library. Sounds like a total winner book. THX for sharing!
DH
Hello! I’m certainly guilty of visiting Friday faves religiously and failing to comment- sorry. I watched a brilliant show on Netflix called Chocolate. It’s a Korean romantic comedy based around food. Love love loved it! Highly recommend
Ashley @ Foodie Crush
Thanks for the comment!!
Heidi
Oh yes! Movies about food definitely deserves a Friday Faves!
