The post is brought to you by Stella & Chewy’s
Hello friends, and happy Friday! And even more, Happy Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
If you’ve been following the blog for any time at all, you know I am a huge supporter of animal rescue, and volunteered / fostered / helped run a rescue organization when we lived in Los Angeles. It was one of the best experiences of my life, where I made incredible life-long friends, and every day witnessed the importance of being more giving, loving, and tolerant, for sure.
We currently have three rescue pups. First, there is Pippa in the pic above, our chihuahua rescue from Best Friends because Ali fell in LOVE with the little pipsqueak. We adopted her the day after the royal wedding so named her after Kate’s sister who stole the show in that white dress. Originally Jeff wanted to name her Lady ChaCha (instead of Lady GaGa) but she is far more a Pippa than a ChaCha, even with those gnarly, pink nails.
After we lost our beloved Chewy and Gigi to old age, then came Zoee from Rescue Rovers in SLC. She was a 1 ½ year old, now 4 year old, ball-obsessed collie mix whose Southern Utah family gave her away, but kept her litter of puppies to sell. Now that’s priorities. And a story all too common. GRRRR. She is the first dog we’ve ever had who didn’t run away at the first chance she had, because, you know, BALLS! I just love her.
Then came Prince, also from Rescue Rovers. Jeff wanted an old dog, and one that was black in color because they’re the least adopted. There were many to choose from but it took just one look into this boy’s old soul eyes and we were goners. He was a 9 year old border collie who we think must have been separated from his family because he came with an amazing set of manners and is the BEST cuddler in the world. Yes, he sleeps between us all night long. He was named in honor of Prince who had died the day before, and he sports a purple collar in his honor.
October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and a reminder that there are millions of homeless animals who are amazing, and ready to become part of your family. We treat ours just like children, and that’s why we respect and support organizations and companies that do too.
When I first learned the story of the founder of Stella & Chewy’s Pet Food and how the vet gave her rescue dog Chewy six months to live, so recommended trying a raw diet to extend his life. And so she did. And it worked. Her story reminded me of years ago when I tried making raw dog food for my own dogs. That didn’t last long. It’s a lot of work!
So discovering she took her passion for providing the best nutrition for her own pets and turned it into a national company for others to reap the benefits from, I knew this was a company I could get behind. Meat is the number one ingredient in their raw blend kibble, like cage-free poultry, grass-fed meat and wild-caught fish, and combined with organic fruits and vegetables that’s baked so it holds onto its nutritional value. And because Stella & Chewy’s bakes their kibble at 200 degrees (where almost all other kibble is extruded at 500 degrees) the food has better flavor thanks to the low and slow bake.
My dogs are eating better than I do.
And because there’s no fillers, it’s easier to digest, and guess what else there’s less of…yup…less poop to scoop. That’s a bonus right there.
It doesn’t hurt that my dogs go CRAZY for the raw blend kibble versus their old food and finicky Prince is very fond of their freeze dried chicken dinner patties. I was running low last week so mixed in some of the old stuff with the Stella & Chewy’s and they totally picked around the old stuff AND LEFT IT! What dog does that??
But I know why they did. It’s because every piece of the raw blend baked kibble is coated with irresistible freeze-dried raw, and they devour it. Even my finicky eater Princey Poo Poo who waits until everyone else finishes their bowls before eating his no longer hesitates to join the rest of the dinner time gang.
So if you’re looking to take great care of your own pups and give them the nutrition they deserve, this is the pet food to try. My dogs are joyfully living proof.
So for today’s links I’m continuing with the dog loving theme. So let’s dig into this week’s Friday Faves.

You may remember Pippa from 4 years ago in her starring role in Pippa Gets Married, where our other two rescues at the time, Chewy and Gigi, played supporting roles. LOVE. What a memory of them all when they were so little, and for our pups now that they’re gone.
