Hello and happy Friday!
Besides eating out too much (yes there’s a hot dog buried under there somewhere) and sleeping on a pillow that left a crick in my neck, I’ve spent the past four days chaperoning my daughter’s high school team basketball camp. I actually wasn’t a chaperone, I was just there for what every teenager needs most: A taxi driver. I wasn’t planning on going on this trip, but thanks to readers like you who make my job one I can take with me, I stepped up to the mom plate. So thank you!!
Being around teenage girls stirs a lot of feelings in a parent. You want your child to be motivated. You want them to be successful. Happy. And above all, healthy in both body and mind while deliberating about what the future holds in store for them. Everything is monumental at this age.
We all know the world revolves around a teenager. It’s that time of life when no one can tell them what to do or how to do it because they know best. These girls, who were once our just learning to walk rosy cheeked nuggets of toddler joy are now rosy blushed teenagers learning the skills they will carry to the big stage of their adult life. These are life lessons they don’t even realize are etching their way into their very fiber. Life lessons to influence them through the journey.
Jelling more as a team is always the goal for intensive time together like this. But there’s so much more these girls are learning from team sports they don’t yet realize, they will carry their entire life.
But these lessons aren’t only for teenagers. They are lessons for all of us to remember.
Here are a few lessons these girls about to be women reminded me of this week:
- How to communicate in more ways than just words.
- Know when to take control and know when to back off.
- Realize it’s not just about you, but those around you.
- Know when it’s your time to share, and when it’s your time to take the shot.
- Know when to take the back seat and when to push someone else to the front.
- When to give your opinion and when to keep it to yourself.
- How to fight through the pain and relish in the sweat and tears that comes with victory.
- How to make others laugh but more often laugh at yourself.
- How to make others feel part of the team when you make them feel comfortable enough to come out of their shell.
- When to take a breath, calm down, and know that all the training you’ve done is now part of your fiber.
- Trust it. Trust your coaches. Trust yourself.

Oh yes! My kids had to read The Things They Carried in high school, and they said I had to read it too. Definitely an important one to read.
