Hello hello and happy Friday!
As any mom of a teenager will tell you, the best time to learn what’s really going on in their lives is in the car. It’s one reason I’m always willing to be the after-school driver to get boba tea or shuttle to and fro from mall excursions or basketball practices. But most of those times are spent with Ali Smudge and her pals, so when I get some one on one in the car with my girl, that’s when we really get to visit, especially when I banish the use of her phone.
I’ve become more and more aware of how much time we all spend on our phones. One study, commissioned by Nokia, found that, as of 2013, we were checking our phones on average 150 times a day. But we touch our phones about 2,617 times.
WHOA. That was way back in 2013. Imagine how it’s gone up since then.
The entire world has their heads down and glued to the screen. Me, my husband, my daughter. Have you ever put your phone down to observe others who are looking at their devices: the customers standing in line, or the mom at the park while her kids play, and the dudes sitting across from each other in restaurants, or worse, when they’re hanging out with other people in totally social situations and should be conversing with each other instead of living though their online presence instead?
So when we were driving and I started in on the lecture about how much time my Smudge is spending on her phone and missing out on what’s going on around her, she agreed. What? Really?
And then she actually said something with a grin that made me feel sort of good…I think?
“Mom, you sound like a Ted Talk. You’re right. You give good advice.”
Whoa #2. Throw it into reverse, Jerry! Get a recording of that for when she’s 16. She took me totally by surprise. I couldn’t tell if she was being sarcastic to her non-millennial-generation-Z mother, or was she really serious like she claimed? For my own sake, I’m claiming the latter and documenting it here to remind her later.
So she won’t be surprised when I lay this challenge she doesn’t have an option to opt out of on her: Could you spend a whole weekend without your phone? Here’s what this woman discovered and it is gold. My daughter is going to hate me while we do this together, but I’m hoping that just like after my little car lecture, she’ll appreciate it, and what she’s learned from it, later.
But enough about me and the digital age, let’s dig into this week’s Friday Faves.
Will the Grease prequel live up to my vision of summer lovin’? It’s my favorite movie evaaah so I sure hope so.
This photo is causing a stir, and for all the right reasons. #girlpower

As a former magazine designer, I’m a devout print junkie so I love all the dish, so naturally I’m totally into following editor-now-writer Ruth Reichl who shares:
- her favorite recipes from long-departed Gourmet — still one of my favorite magazines.
- why Gourmet‘s website was doomed from the start.
- her newest memoir about her days as editor is in my cart now.
