Hey hey and happy Friday.
If you are like me and 43 million other households, you were glued to the TV for last weekend’s NFL playoff games. That is nearly half of all residences watching TV were tuned into the four games. HOLY COW! Now THAT is what makes games great. We will be glued again this weekend with cheers going to the 49ers and the Chiefs. Oh boy, there’s going to be some wrassling going on.
But we weren’t only watching football last weekend, we were cooking this gumbo and scarfing it down too. It’s one of our favorite comfort food dishes and perfect for footballing because it can sit and stew until ready to eat. It’s not hard to make, with patience while cooking the roux just about the only thing you really need to have.
Yesterday, I watched this segment about the 98-year-old Holocaust survivor who has become a TikTok star and she is far and beyond more amazing than any “influencer” I’ve ever seen.
Much to the embarrassment of my daughter, I will more than happily strike up a conversation with a stranger at any time. I love people. I love my family. I love my friends. But even more, I really love being alone and hibernating in my house. I’m not anti-social, but am I socially selective?
This light show is incredible. Seeing video of it really makes me want to add it to my travel bucket list.
We all know movement keeps us young, but youngsters that can move like this?? Hot damn! This kid’s got the moves! How does she have such skill at such a young age?
Probably the main reason I watch the local news is for the weather report, and that’s why this made me laugh because she is such a good sport.
I have so many cookbooks. SO MANY COOKBOOKS. Even with the cupboards full, I’m always adding to the collection. One of my favorite sources is thrift stores. I have scored some of the best finds, new and old. From revered classics by Italian cooking guru Marcella Hazen and the esteemed James Beard, to tomes like The Joy of Cooking, all for the price of a cup of coffee and even less than a latte! Another tip if buying from Amazon, buy it used instead of new.
All the heart eyes for this insane-looking toast. YUM.

Heidi,
Love your site. Recipes and Friday Faves are so much fun.
I read recently that you can see the Northern Lights from North Michigan. Though travelling to Norway and the like would be great, Michigan is a much more doable trip right now. I’ve never been there to see them, but have a grandson going to the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, so looked at what might be fun to see in Michigan. Check with Michigan travel sites to find where and when are the best opportunities.
