Hi there friends, and happy Friday!
Since I’ve moved my home office into a new room of the house, I’m finding myself working more consistently (the laundry can wait!) and being more productive with my head down and fewer distractions. Kudos for that! And while I enjoy the silence of a quiet house where the only sounds are the hum of the furnace and the click clack of my puppers paws on the upstairs floor, I’m also listening to more music as I work at my desk.
At first I was skeptical of the hype, but the more I listen to this album, the more I totally get lost in it. I can’t stop listening because it’s so easy to listen to. It’s her lilting voice but also the lyrics that drift into my consciousness without drilling them into my brain.
“Even if you got somebody on your mind, It’s alright to be alone sometimes, sometimes.”
That line begs the question I think of a lot: Why is it that so many of us can’t be alone?
Alone in our homes. Alone in our thoughts. Today there is so much ease and opportunity to fill those silent moments of being alone it’s like we’ve become afraid to embrace them. When was the last time you didn’t reach for your phone while standing in the check out line or at a stop light? When did you feel perfectly okay eating lunch in a restaurant by yourself and just watch the world go by?
Being alone is when your thoughts wander and inspiration strikes. Dreams happen. Reflection on what went right or wrong makes the path for the next step.
I suppose when you have people who are a never-ending presence in your life, it’s easy to say you like being alone. I’m for sure in that camp. I’ve had a partner for years and I love being with my family like nothing else. But I LOVE being alone. I crave it. So when I have the chance—which these days isn’t often—I jump at it.
Work travel gives me time to be alone, and I enjoy that aspect, but one of my goals this year is to take some time, just a weekend, to go away all by myself and check in with me.
So I want to know: If you could go somewhere for a weekend, by yourself, where would you go?
I’m working on my spring bucket list and this is one part of it. So email me back or leave a comment below, I’d love to hear what you think.
