Hey! Would you lookie there. Things for 2015 are looking a bit different around here.
Yep, just like every one of my favorite Housewives of Beverly Hills, FoodieCrush went under the knife and is looking all the better for it.
But this is more than just a facelift for FoodieCrush. We went under the hood, kicked the tires, tidied up a bit and added some new features to take us into 2015 and beyond.
Much of what you expect from FoodieCrush is still exactly the same. But now we’ve added a few new features and functions that will make this site run faster, be easier to navigate on your desktop, handier to reference on your mobile (take THAT Facebook!) and help you get into the kitchen and ready to cook with even more inspiration than before.
None of this could have been possible without my cracker jack design and html team of WoodenSpoons Kitchen. Melissa took some of the flair and design from my online magazine and integrated it into the design of the site to show off it’s more playful side with fonts and a bolder typographic feel. And Erin dealt with me and my crazy, I-so-don’t-get-html-but-can-you-make-this-happen requests and somehow (calmly and lucidly) made them happen.
So how about we take a tour of what’s new!
A New Homepage and Logo
As a magazine designer I know that people discover information in different ways. Some people read a magazine from the back to the front, some leaf through the pages, some go straight for the table of contents.
That’s why I wanted to give every style of reader the opportunity to discover FoodieCrush content in their own way.
If you’re a table of content’s reader you’ll really like that we’ve expanded the navigation and moved it to the left hand column of the page for ready reference.
If you like to skim first to get an overall feel for what’s out there, we’ve created shorter excerpts of every blog post to view quickly and in a more visual format.
And if you like to start at the end so you already know what you’re missing, head to the bottom of the homepage to discover my tabbed recipe recommendations and discover what’s Healthy, Popular and Seasonal. They’re are all on this month’s top of the charts list.
And finally, once I decided to make a change with bigger type for the body of the site (you’re welcome Mom!) and new fonts for the headlines, the old FoodieCrush logo didn’t quite fit the new FC style. So I plumped her up a bit (*no botox or fillers!) and gave her a little more flair. Compare the old and the new here.
I must say, I’m starting to really like her curves.
Easier Recipe Navigation
Take a look at the top left hand side of the page and you’ll see a new way to discover recipes on FoodieCrush, by looking for them according to when you’re craving them. Whether it’s breakfast or cocktails, healthy recipes or decadent splurges, with a click you’ll be given suggestions to find what you’re craving.
Are you a seasonal eater too? These categories will be filling up with more ideas of what to eat when it’s fresh from the field or when you’re craving that comfort food slow cooker soup or if you just can’t wait for Valentine’s day sweets.
FoodieCrush Store: eBooks, Cookbooks, Courses and More!
One of the main reasons I wanted to do a site redesign was to create shop where I can share ebooks, print cookbooks, my favorite magazines and courses that will help you in and out of the kitchen. The store will be filling up over the next few weeks so check in to see what’s new.
If you have an ebook or course you’d like featured here, send me an email and let me know.
So Many Blog Crushes All In One Place
Featuring other food bloggers is the whole reason I started this blog, and my food blogger Q&As have always been a fave. Now you can find my monthly lists of 5 Food Bloggers I’m Following Now, my food blogger Q&As and other food blogger features in their own easily referenced section. Hop on over and give them a gander.
Then head down to the bottom of the homepage to see my monthly rotating list of food blogs I’m crushing on now.
And coming soon, a live feed of the most recent posts from food bloggers on my daily reading list.
Buzzword Alert: A Mobile Responsive Site
With 60% of my traffic coming here from mobile devices (yes, that’s you too iPad), it was time to make it that much easier for you to read FoodieCrush on your phone while at the office and you should be working, in the after school pick-up lane or at the grocery store searching for a recipe.
That means the look is more streamlined and will look different than if you were looking at it on a computer, but you won’t have as much bulk to slow you down.
There’s more to discover, and more to come. But why should I ruin the fun of discovering it for yourself, and making this site your own.
I’d love to hear what you think and what’s working for you, and especially what isn’t.
